Top CB target announces visit to Michigan State football
Much of the focus for Michigan State football right now is on spring practice and working with the current roster. However, that doesn't mean that recruiting isn't a major focus for Jonathan Smith and his staff as well.
One thing that Smith and his staff have done a lot of recently is getting their recruiting targets on campus for unofficial visits. Official visit season doesn't begin for another two months, but getting recruits to take unofficial visits is still extremely important. And that is exactly what Michigan State has just done as they have locked in a visit from one of their top targets at corner for a visit this coming weekend.
Jayden Shipps is a three-star cornerback from Severn, Md. According to On3, Jayden is the No. 859 player in the country and the No. 67 corner in his class. He's also the No. 19 player from the state of Maryland as well. Jayden will be visiting Michigan State on April 13, which will be his first visit to East Lansing. This visit is massive because according to the staff at 247Sports, Jayden is "one of MSU's top targets at corner in this recruiting cycle."
Shipps has many other offers from major college football programs including Maryland, NC State, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Boston College, and Indiana. There are no predictions made in Jayden's recruitment yet, but there are three teams that appear to be the frontrunners right now.
NC State, Virginia, and Maryland are the three schools that have already set up official visits with Jayden beginning in June. So this tells me that as of today those schools lead in his recruitment. But that doesn't mean Michigan State can't get in the mix as well. The Spartans only offered Jayden on Feb. 1, and now he is already planning an unofficial visit. This tells us that he at least has some interest in Michigan State. Now the next step for Jonathan Smith will be to get him locked up for an official visit this summer, which I am guessing is his plan this weekend on his visit.
If the Spartans are one of Shipps' top schools, we likely will find out fast after he visits MSU. If another visit is scheduled then Michigan State is likely in a good spot, but if nothing else results from this visit, I wouldn't get my hopes up in this recruitment anymore.
