The coolest thing to happen this weekend will have nothing to do with the football game being played on the field. Former Michigan State football head coach Mark Dantonio will be honored by having his name entered into the Spartans' Ring of Honor on Saturday when the Spartans take on Ohio State, a program that Dantonio won a national championship with as an assistant.

It’s quite easy to forget how great we as Michigan State fans had it during the early 2010s. That’s when Dantonio had the football program playing at the highest level, winning Big Ten championships, a Rose Bowl, and making the College Football Playoff. But on top of that Tom Izzo was doing his thing with the basketball team and competing and winning at the highest level at the same time.

We got to witness both teams make a Final Four within a few months of each other, something no other program in the country can say.

So it’s no surprise to find out that Izzo and Dantonio are very good friends after how long they both found success at Michigan State over the course of their many years of coaching together.

Izzo shared a special message with Dantonio ahead of his Ring of Honor induction, and man does it really make the emotions come flooding back.

"To go into the College Football Hall of Fame, I don’t think it gets any better than this."

Izzo continued.

"I appreciate the friendship, I appreciate the support. And I’m going to be excited to share with you some incredible coaching honors that you’re receiving this weekend."

I don’t think we’ll ever experience something as great as we did when these two were coaching together. It isn’t often that your school’s football and basketball coaches both end up being Hall of Famers, but that’s what happened at Michigan State and this is something I’ll cherish forever.

Nobody deserves to be in the Hall of Fame more than Dantonio, and I can’t wait to see the reaction he gets at from a sold-out Spartan Stadium on Saturday.
