Jonathan Smith did everything he could this offseason to improve the Michigan State football backfield. It was an absolute disaster after the 2023 season with the offensive line struggling as much as it did. Jalen Berger didn't have the best year and Nate Carter was held back by that play in the trenches.

With Berger hitting the transfer portal along with Jaren Mangham, Smith had to turn to the portal to complement Carter in the backfield.

Smith went out and targeted a handful of transfer running backs but landed on UMass' Kay'Ron Lynch-Adams who was coming off a 1,000-yard season in 2023. He broke out with the Minutemen last year and he now joins a completely revamped Michigan State backfield.

And while Nate Carter rushed for 798 yards and fell short of what people probably expected, he showed flashes during a season in which the offensive line play was abysmal.

Entering the 2024 season, the offensive line looks to be vastly improved and the Spartans are featuring a backfield that had over 1,800 combined rushing yards last year. This running back duo is being overlooked by just about everyone and that's going to look silly come late-September or October when they make up one of the most improved rushing attacks in the Big Ten.

Granted, the run game can't get much worse than it was a year ago, but I would be shocked if the Spartans didn't have a 1,000-yard rusher this season (my guess would be Carter) to go along with another guy rushing for over 500-600.
