Jonathan Smith has made a lot of great moves since becoming head coach of Michigan State football. Hiring a competent coaching staff and having a productive spring practice schedule are a couple of the solid things he's done so far.

But arguably the greatest thing he has done at Michigan State are all of the commitments he has earned from the transfer portal.

Recruiting the transfer portal hard was always a must the second he reached campus for a few reasons. First and foremost was because the team was not very good the last few seasons to begin with. Then is the fact that so many current players entered the portal themselves leaving Michigan State. So when you add those two things together, Smith had to strike gold in the portal, and it appears he has done that so far.

With the calendar now turning to June, the transfer portal has officially died down throughout the country. That however might change soon according to Smith himself.

When asked if the roster has settled down now that there hasn't been a commitment from the portal in awhile, Smith shared, "Pretty close. Potential addition, maybe one."

Now I know this doesn't tell us much at all, but the fact that there still might be another addition from the portal this offseason is very exciting. Even with all the talent Smith and his staff have added already, it's no secret that they can still use more. There is always room for improvement no matter how strong the program gets, but especially with where things are at now, MSU has a lot more room for improvement than other programs around the country.

Time will tell if and when a new commitment will be announced, but even if Michigan State doesn't get a new portal acquisition I'll still be very excited knowing Smith was working this hard in the portal at this point in the offseason.
