Recapping all 13 Michigan State basketball players’ performances at Moneyball
6. Szymon Zapala
Transfer big man Szymon Zapala had himself a pretty average summer of Moneyball. He averaged 19.5 points per game which is pretty good, but he didn’t show me too much that would make me extremely excited that Izzo went out and got him out of the portal.
I will give Zapala a little credit because he did show off a decent jump shot by nearly averaging one 3-pointer per game. But half of his made threes this summer came in one game, so how consistent is he really from deep?
I’m not sure how Izzo plans to use Zapala this season. I still wish Izzo got a more impactful transfer down low this offseason, but it appears he wants to ride with the duo of Kohler and Cooper once again. Maybe Zapala will see a couple reserve minutes off the bench, but I’d almost rather give those to McCulloch to help him develop for the future.
So we’re going to have to wait and see how Izzo handles Zapala this season, I just hope he makes at least a little impact so he doesn’t feel like a wasted pickup from the portal.
