8. 2016-17

The 2016-17 Michigan State basketball team felt eerily similar to the 2021-22 team we just talked about. I also think they are very similar competitively as well, but I have to give the slight edge to this team as they had more playmakers.

Five-star Miles Bridges was the clear offensive leader of this team, but his freshman running mates were no joke either. This team also had Cassius Winston, but the freshman version of him wasn't all that special quite yet. MSU also had sharpshooters Joshua Langford and Matt McQuaid, but neither of them had grown into the best versions of themselves yet.

This team had a lot of great players on it, but the problem was they hadn't grown into their best versions of themselves quite yet. They didn't have an upperclassman to lead this team on the court, and that is what led them to a measly 20-15 (10-8) record and second-round exit in the NCAA Tournament.

This team, however, showed a lot of glimpses of what they could become, and that is why you will see the teams with the older versions of these players much later on this list.
