2. Defensive line

Stop me if you've heard this about other positions, but the defensive line is a big question mark going into the season.

The transfer portal took their two best players in Simeon Barrow and Derrick Harmon, but acquired multiple transfers to fill their roles, Moneyball style. Of the 24 incoming transfers, seven of them are across the defensive line and five of them are from other Power Four schools.

With today's pass-heavy offenses, getting to the quarterback is priority No. 1 for any defense and the Spartans were middle of the road in sacks in the conference last year. Returning contributors Khris Bogle, Ken Talley, Maverick Hansen, and Avery Dunn look to build upon last year's experience and the additions of Ben "Big Worm" Roberts (Oregon) and Quindarius Dunnigan (Middle Tennessee State) should boost this group.
