Proof that Charles Brantley is one of the best DBs in college football
Michigan State defensive back Charles Brantley is having quite the season. Expectations for Brantley were relatively high as he entered his fourth season in East Lansing, but I think most were hesitant to get too hopeful because of the issues in the secondary in recent years.
Brantley however has not just met expectations this season, he also hasn’t just exceeded expectations, he has smashed any and all expectations set before him this season.
After Michigan State’s Week 3 win at Maryland Brantley was the highest-rated cornerback in the country according to PFF. This however wasn’t a “one-hit-wonder” performance from Brantley, it’s actually been the norm throughout the entire season so far.
Now as Michigan State heads into their Week 5 date with Ohio State, PFF has released their rankings of defensive backs who have allowed the lowest passer rating this year, and to nobody’s surprise, Brantley made the cut.
As you will see in the above post Brantley is the No. 5 defensive back in the country when it comes to passer rating given up. In fact, he has the lowest rating outside of the guys with a perfect 0.0.
Did anyone see this coming? I know I didn’t. I wouldn’t have been surprised to see Brantley become one of Michigan State’s top defensive backs this season, but nobody saw Brantley being one of the best in the country coming.
If the Spartans are gonna have a chance at racking up some wins these next few weeks Brantley is going to have to continue to play at this elite of a level. Thankfully I think he is more than capable of doing so.
His biggest test of the season will undoubtedly be Saturday against Ohio State, but if he’s able to be this productive against an elite passing attack that the Buckeyes have then nobody will be able to deny that Brantley’s the real deal.
