One Aidan Chiles throw against Ohio State won the doubters over (Video)
Through four games, Michigan State football fans were hesitant to buy all the way in on Aidan Chiles. The talent was obviously there, but his youth and inconsistency were obvious.
The Spartans struggled to consistently move the ball through the air because too many drives were ending in errant throws or turnovers. Chiles was making some plays but it would almost be one step forward and two steps back after he'd make a great throw and then force a pass into double coverage on the next play.
So coming off his worst performance of the year (I'm going to blame the rain and play-calling against Boston College for this), everyone was worried about him facing the nation's No. 2 defense.
But he actually stepped up and looked more than competent. Chiles looked like a budding superstar against Ohio State and even Buckeye fans took note. They took to social media during and after the game to praise Chiles, stating that he's going to be a problem for years.
Michigan State fans saw the vision, too.
There was one throw during the game that silenced a lot of his loudest critics and really opened some eyes. The throw wasn't just good, it was elite. It was an NFL throw. Heck, some NFL quarterbacks can't even make this throw.
This toss was fantastic. Chiles dropped back after a play action, had plenty of time, and found his favorite receiver, Nick Marsh, about 26 yards down the field for a huge play in the first half while trailing 17-7. At that point in the game, he was 8-for-9 with 140 yards and a touchdown. He looked elite.
The game got away from the Spartans because of some turnovers and lackluster defense close to the end of the first half, but this throw had everyone's jaws on the floor.
If you think about it, he tossed the ball about 50 yards through the air. He was on his own 33-yard-line when the ball came out of his hands and got it to the opposing 35 (32 yards) and from the right hash to the sideline. And he made it look effortless. Oh, and it was right where it had to be -- right where only Marsh could make the catch.
These are the types of throws that Chiles can make when he actually has time and a clean pocket. When he's given time and isn't running for his life or rushing throws, he is an elite passer. Give this man an offensive line that can protect for 3-4 seconds and he's going to be an All-Big Ten quarterback and top NFL draft prospect.
Saturday won a lot of doubters over, especially after this throw.
