If you are looking for a new team to follow closely this fall sports season you're in luck because the Michigan State women's soccer team is waiting for you.

The Spartans were just named the No. 1 team in the country earlier this week for the first time in program history, so if that doesn't get you at least a little interested than nothing will.

Michigan State is undefeated through 11 games so far this season with eight wins and three ties, and the Spartans most recent game they did something I, as an avid soccer fan, can't remember the last time I saw.

In the Spartans' road matchup Thursday night against the No. 11 Ohio State Buckeyes, senior goalie Kaitlyn Parks stepped up and netted a penalty kick goal to take a 2-1 lead. The fact that a goalie scored during live play is insane on it's own, but that does happen in soccer at the end of games at times when a team is losing and desperately need a goal in the last seconds. One thing however that almost never happens is a goalie scoring minutes into the second half.

For those of you that don't know much about soccer, if Parks didn't score here the ball would be live and play would continue, she would not be given time to return over 100 yards to defend her goal. Ohio State could have moved the ball up the field and scored fairly easily.

But the Spartans were a measly 1-for-3 on penalty kicks this season, so head coach Jeff Hosler had to try something different and thankfully it worked out for the team.

The two-time defending Big Ten Champions continue their pursuit of a third straight conference title next week with two home games against Rutgers and Michigan on Sept. 29 and Oct. 5, respectively. However, this year's team has goals much larger than winning the Big Ten as they failed to make much noise in the NCAA Tournament the previous two seasons.

Hopefully this year is much different and ends with the Spartans lifting a new trophy for the first time in program history, the national championship trophy.
