It's time we start talking about Michigan State's women's soccer team.

This time of the year there is typically only one thing on the minds of all Michigan State fans and that is the football team. And rightfully so, it is the biggest sport going on right now and arguably the biggest sport college athletics has to offer.

But there is another team in East Lansing that deserves to be talked about because they are doing something the program has never done before.

And that is the Michigan State women's soccer team.

I have been watching their season very closely this year because they are the two-time defending Big Ten champions, and while my expectations for them were to compete and win the conference once again I think it's time to adjust those expectations because as of Tuesday they are the new number one team in the country.

The Spartans' season is 10 games in and they are undefeated with eight wins and two ties. Those two ties came against two ranked opponents including the current No. 2 team in Arkansas, so they do not have a bad result yet this season.

Their most recent match saw them travel to Penn State to take on the No. 9 Nittany Lions, a game MSU ended up winning 1-0 off a goal from senior Justina Gaynor. That result this past weekend was good enough to have Michigan State move up to No. 1 in the coaches poll rankings which is the most respected poll in college soccer.

Up next for the Spartans is another tough test against No. 11 Ohio State in Columbus. After that the Spartans have back to back home games against Rutgers and Michigan. Their game against the Wolverines is on Saturday Oct. 5 so I think it's safe to say that this is a game the fanbase needs to come out and support the team.

Michigan State failed to find any significant success in the NCAA Tournament the last two seasons, but with the Spartans soaring up to No. 1 in the rankings the expectation now is for them to make a deep run. And I for one can't wait to watch and see what they accomplish the rest of this season.
