Jonathan Smith and Michigan State football are having a fantastic offseason thus far, making moves left and right to improve the roster for 2024.

While everyone is assuming this is going to be a lengthy rebuild in East Lansing, I would tend to argue that the transfer portal will cut down on that time by at least a year or two. And the moves Smith keeps making should trim the turnaround time even more.

After getting Geno VanDeMark and Derrick Harmon to withdraw their names from the portal on Wednesday, everyone seems to be much higher on the Spartans.

And the good news keeps rolling in.

In fact, according to Allen Trieu, Michigan State is one of the teams that MAC Offensive Player of the Year Peny Boone is hoping to hear from after entering the transfer portal.

Boone finished with 1,400 rushing yards and 219 receiving yards with 16 total touchdowns in 2023, earning the MAC Offensive Player of the Year honors. This was his second year with the Rockets, totaling just 439 yards rushing and three scores a year ago. He also improved his yards per carry from 3.8 to 7.2 from 2022 to 2023.

One of the most improved running backs also happens to be a gem in the portal.

The fit might seem a little odd since Michigan State has Nathan Carter, Jalen Berger, Jaren Mangham, and Jaelon Barbarin for the 2024 season already, but I wouldn't be shocked if someone in the deep running back room entered the portal. Plus, Boone is from Detroit, so a return home isn't out of the question and that would be a good fit.
