Michigan State football has one week of spring practice remaining, meaning that recruiting is about to become an even greater focus for Jonathan Smith and the rest of the coaching staff. The staff has a lot of work to do recruiting the 2025 high school class, but they also have work to do in the transfer portal as well.

Smith has brought in 10 transfers since becoming head coach, but according to 247Sports the Spartans are likely to be one of the most active teams in the portal again this spring and summer.

Michigan State already has their eyes set on their next transfer portal target, as the Spartans made an offer and scheduled a visit with a former Indiana Hoosier.

Anthony Jones is a redshirt freshman edge rusher who has spent two seasons in college so far. Out of high school, he began his career at Oregon where he did not see the field much and ended up redshirting. After that season, he entered the transfer portal and headed east where he joined the Indiana Hoosiers. There, Jones played in six games recording 12 tackles throughout the season.

Jones once again has entered the transfer portal, and Jonathan Smith and the Spartans have come knocking. According to Jason Killop from On3, the Spartans not only have offered Jones, but they have an upcoming visit scheduled with him next week as well.

Now don't get me wrong, Jones isn't someone that is going to come in and be a day one starter for Michigan State. But he would help fix one problem this team has had the last few years: Lack of depth. For a few years now, Michigan State has had quality players as their starters, but they didn't have very many options beyond them. Not having solid options in the two-deep is extremely detrimental to a football team, but Jones joining Michigan State would help fix that.

This weekend has a chance to be a massive one in East Lansing for Jonathan Smith and MSU. The Spring Showcase is always a huge weekend for the program, but it's even more so now since it's the first under Smith. With a lot of fans likely in attendance, this could be a huge draw for any recruit that decides to come.
