Friday was a big day for Michigan State football on the recruiting trail. No, the Spartans didn't get a commitment from the high school ranks or portal, but they received so much good news with a lot of prospects they are after.

This includes transfer defensive end Anthony Johnson, who has put Michigan State in his top four.

According to Pete Nakos with On3, Anthony Johnson has put Michigan State in his top four. Johnson has spent the past three seasons at Youngstown State where he has struggled to see the field. This includes 2023 where he only accumulated 22 tackles the entire season. However, he did have four sacks.

Also included in Johnson's top four are Pittsburgh, Arkansas, and Mississippi State. So even with his somewhat lack of production, Johnson still has a lot of major college football programs recruiting him hard. So if Michigan State is serious about Johnson as a transfer, it is going to be hard for them to win this recruitment.

However, even though his stats aren't that impressive, I still think he could be a solid depth piece for MSU. Especially after Simeon Barrow Jr. entered the portal, the Spartans could use a little extra help on the defensive line, and Johnson could do just that. Johnson would not be someone who would come in and compete for a starting position, but he would be able to see some playing time as a backup. And honestly, I would be okay with that. He has one year of eligibility remaining, so bringing in a veteran guy isn't the worst idea.

Time will tell how hard Jonathan Smith pushes for a commitment here, but this is just another example of how well he is doing in the transfer portal so far.
