Jonathan Smith may have lost a number of players to the portal, but the first-year Michigan State football coach has done an excellent job of landing transfers as well.

It feels like we hear about a new transfer visiting every other day and on Wednesday, Michigan State got word that it made the top four for one of the top wide receivers in the portal.

That receiver is Auburn's Ja'Varrius Johnson.

As of last week, Johnson was planning on taking an official visit to Michigan State this week and he already saw UCF and was also scheduling another trip to Arizona. Texas A&M might be the wild card here but it's tough to say no to staying in the SEC and the Aggies who seemingly always have a solid offense -- it should be even better under Mike Elko.

It'd be interesting to see if the Spartans can land a former Payton Thorne target just one year after losing his No. 1 guy, Keon Coleman, to the transfer portal.

The receiver room could use some depth after losing Antonio Gates Jr. to the transfer portal this week and the room has been somewhat depleted this offseason. However, Nick Marsh showed that he will be a star maybe even in year one with MSU and Alante Brown and Jaron Glover both return along with Montorie Foster Jr. The room has talent, but it lacks depth.

That's why Smith has been active with wideouts in the portal and Johnson would be a good fit.

We'll see if he likes the idea of playing with Aidan Chiles or if he was sold on his visits to UCF or Arizona. Let's hope Smith can land him this week on his visit.
