Michigan State football, Jonathan Smith prioritizing RBs in the transfer portal
One year removed from one of the worst rushing attacks in Michigan State football history, things are quickly changing in East Lansing.
Not only did the Spartans hire a head coach who knows the importance of an elite run game, but they also added a mobile quarterback and seemingly assembled an improved offensive line to pave the way for returning running back Nathan Carter.
Jonathan Smith's desire to improve the run game is evident.
And while what he's done so far has been impressive in regards to retaining Carter, adding a mobile quarterback, and improving the offensive line, he's not done yet. He's not content.
Over the past week since the transfer portal opened up for the spring window, Smith has been in contact with a number of running backs. He's reached out to the likes of Peny Boone from Louisville, Kay'Ron Lynch-Adams from UMass, and Andrew Paul from Georgia. All three backs would drastically improve the offense and give Carter a nice one-two punch mate.
The Spartans are already trending for Lynch-Adams who rushed for over 1,000 yards last season to go along with 12 touchdowns. And Paul was just on campus this past weekend.
The backfield is a priority for Smith and he's not stopping until he adds to it.
Right now, I'd be surprised if the Spartans didn't come away with one of Paul and Lynch-Adams and if that's the case, they'll have an improved backfield behind a much better offensive line, benefitting from vastly improved quarterback play. This offense is about to take a massive step forward under Smith.
