Michigan State football lands UNC DB transfer Lejond Cavazos
Jonathan Smith just doesn't take days off in the transfer portal and you have to love that as a Michigan State football fan. On Mother's Day, he landed a defensive tackle transfer from Old Dominion and on Monday, he picked up another commitment.
This time, it was in the form of veteran defensive back help.
The Spartans landed former four-star defensive back Lejond Cavazos from North Carolina. He started his career at Ohio State after playing at the prestigious IMG Academy in high school and was in Columbus for two years, appearing in five games with seven total tackles before transferring to North Carolina.
At North Carolina, he had 18 tackles, a tackle for loss, and two pass breakups in 2022 before getting injured in 2023 and missing most of the season.
Although he doesn't have a ton of production under his belt (25 total tackles, four pass breakups), he brings experience from two Power Five program as well as arguably the most talent-rich high school in the country. He will have a chance to prove himself worthy of starting snaps this season in a defensive backfield that can use all the help it can get.
Michigan State lost some key players to the transfer portal, including starting safety Jaden Mangham and this could be a move that directly affects that position as Cavazos can play corner or safety.
Add Cavazos to the addition of Ed Woods and Smith has gotten a couple of really solid transfers in his defensive backfield who should help immediately.
