Michigan State football lands solid Cincinnati EDGE transfer Tyler Gillison
The Michigan State football transfer class grew yet again on Monday afternoon.
After looking for defensive linemen and edge rushers in the transfer portal all offseason, Jonathan Smith has landed another piece to the puzzle in the trenches.
On Monday, he gained a commitment from Cincinnati EDGE transfer and younger brother of former Michigan State tight end Trenton Gillison, Tyler Gillison.
Gillison wasn't the most sought-after high school recruit as he was rated just an 84 on 247Sports and was the No. 177 defensive lineman in the 2022 class. But he's played well so far in his young career after redshirting in 2022. He actually racked up 15 tackles this past season and 2.5 tackles for loss to go along with a pass breakup. He showed flashes of being a valuable reserve edge rusher.
Michigan State has lost plenty along the defensive line so far this offseason with the departures of Simeon Barrow (Miami), Derrick Harmon (Oregon), Bai Jobe, and Andrew Depaepe. It's been tough to see all of these promising players leave through the portal, but Jonathan Smith is addressing those departures.
Gillison is 6-foot-3 and 238 pounds and he should be a nice backup piece on the edge to help the pass rush. The Spartans had one of the worst pass rushes in the nation a year ago and that should change now with the help of the Cincinnati transfer and a healthy Khris Bogle.
I would bet money that Smith isn't done in the portal when it pertains to the defensive line, especially after losing Brandon Lane shortly after he committed.
