Michigan State football coach Jonathan Smith is remaining hot on the recruiting trail.

Just a couple short months ago, Michigan State's 2025 recruiting class had zero commitments and everyone was wondering when Smith would get things going. Well, all it took was the spring and the first couple of weeks of official visits in the summer to really cook up some momentum.

Now, the class sits at eight commitments after three-star Texas-based receiver Charles Taplin committed to the Spartans on Friday evening.

Taplin was one of the priority skill position targets for the Spartans and he just took a trip to East Lansing last weekend. The three-star receiver looks like he could be rising in the rankings in the near future, but as of his commitment, he's listed as the No. 141 receiver in the 2025 class, per 247Sports. He joins recent three-star commit Braylon Collier as the other receiver in the Spartans' class.

Michigan State's offensive class is coming together nicely with Collier and Taplin at receiver, Emmett Bork at tight end, Jace Clarizio at running back, Drew Nichols on the offensive line, and Leo Hannan at quarterback. On defense, the Spartans have some good talent, too, with Charles White and Di'Mari Malone at linebacker.

Smith has done a really good job of piecing together a class that may not be quite as star-studded as people may have hoped, but these guys fit the Spartan mold.

And if Michigan State can put together a winning product on the field, we'll see more four-stars and blue-chip commitments picking the Spartans.

Also, Courtney Hawkins continues to show that he was the perfect hire as receivers coach.
