The transfer portal in college football officially opened on Tuesday, meaning the craziest time of the offseason is officially upon us. That will definitely be true for Michigan State football as they will likely be active in the portal with many players.

That is true again today as the Spartans have now been publically connected with a solid wide receiver in the transfer portal.

Who is Justus Ross-Simmons?

Justus Ross-Simmons is a transfer wide receiver from Colorado State. He has spent the last two seasons at Colorado State where he has had two very solid seasons. As a true freshman, he hauled in 26 receptions or 424 yards and three touchdowns. This last season as a sophomore, he took it up another level, grabbing 45 balls for 724 yards and three more touchdowns.

Ross-Simmons also has big play potential as well which you hope to see in any wide receiver MSU is recruiting. Both as a freshman and sophomore, he had season long catches of over 75 yards. His stats alone make me really want him in East Lansing, but the ability to make the big play makes him a must have transfer in my eyes.

Recruiting competition

According to Pete Nakos with On3, Michigan State is one of six teams to have reached out to Ross-Simmons so far. USC, Washington, Liberty, Cincinnati, and South Carolina have also contacted him as well.

The competition for Ross-Simmons is obviously really strong already, and I imagine as time goes on more and more teams are going to reach out to him. So it’s huge hearing that Jonathan Smith has already made contact this early in the recruiting process.

The next step is bringing Ross-Simmons to East Lansing on a visit. If Smith can do that, I’ll have a lot of confidence that MSU can win this recruitment. But until then, we won’t know exactly where Michigan State stands in this recruitment, but you have to love the sense of urgency Smith is displaying so far in the portal.
