Michigan State basketball needs to target Trey Townsend in transfer portal
With Michigan State basketball fully in offseason mode, there’s one thing that Tom Izzo must do, and that is recruiting the transfer portal. Many legitimate options are already out there for Izzo to choose from, but a new name is about to hit the portal that should be at the top of his list.

Trey Townsend is a junior forward from Oakland that many of you have probably heard of. Oakland is coming off a magical run in the NCAA Tournament which saw them upset 3-seed Kentucky then almost knock off NC State in the second round. Trey Townsend is one of the biggest reasons this run happened for Oakland.
In the two NCAA tournament games for Oakland, Trey recorded two dominant double-doubles. This includes 17 points in their win over Kentucky and a whopping 30 points in their OT loss to NC State. Trey also exploded for 38 points and 11 rebounds in the Horizon league championship game to help Oakland make it into the NCAA Tournament.
I think it’s pretty clear that Townsend would be a huge addition to Michigan State’s team. Not only based on his elite abilities, but because he fits in the roster perfectly. With Malik Hall graduating this year, he could come in and immediately help fill that void. The Spartans also need another scoring threat and someone who can create their own shot like Tyson Walker, and Trey once again can help fill that void.
The Spartans, however, do need a center from the portal as well, and Townsend does not help MSU there, but I still don’t think this is enough to not go after him. When this good of a player hits the portal it’s silly to not go after him. Then you add in the fact that he is originally from Michigan which likely would give the Spartans a good chance in his recruitment as well. Townsend is also declaring for the NBA draft as well, so that does make it even harder to win this recruitment.
Time will tell if Izzo goes after him or not, but Trey’s going to be one of the most sought after names in the portal. So if Izzo is going to get him, he’s going to have to get involved right away.
