Kristian Phillips has reportedly won starting RG job for Michigan State football
Fall position battles have been the topic of conversation for Michigan State football and across the country and while the most important position (quarterback) is already figured out, there are still other crucial battles to be ironed out.
Some of these battles happened along along the offensive line over the past couple of weeks.
We know that Tanner Miller is going to be starting at center, Brandon Baldwin and Ashton Lepo will likely own the tackle spots, and Luke Newman looks like the starting left guard but there was still a question mark at right guard to answer. There's been a strong battle between Kristian Phillips and Gavin Broscious, but it sounds like it's been decided.
According to Justin Thind of 247Sports, Phillips won the starting job.
There's been a lot of hope surrounding Phillips becoming the player many believe he can be and his size, strength, and quickness for that frame were major reasons he won the job. While Broscious figures to be a major part of the future outlook on the offensive line, his turn is going to have to wait. He's still going to get opportunities and I'd bet that he and Phillips split some reps.
But this is a good sign for Michigan State that the starters are beginning to separate themselves and there's actual depth on the roster along the offensive line.
Phillips still has three years of eligibility left so that gives Michigan State a starter up front who could be in place for the next 2-3 years and the same goes for Lepo and Broscious. Let's not forget that Michigan State still has guys like Stanton Ramil, Cole Dellinger, Rustin Young, and Andrew Dennis waiting in the wings who could all be stars along the line in the next few years.
Jim Michalczik has himself a nice offensive line to work with.
