Aidan Chiles didn't have his best performance on Friday night. You know it, I know it, he knows it, and Jonathan Smith knows it. It was far from what he's capable of doing.

Some heads were hanging after watching his 10-for-24 with two interceptions performance on Friday night in a slim win over Florida Atlantic, but they shouldn't be. It was his first-ever start as a college quarterback and we see to forget that the kid is only 19. He's going to get better. This was something to learn from and he's probably not going to have a game like this again.

However, it was still far from what we all expected from him against an average FAU defense and Chiles even took full responsibility after the game for the shaky performance offensively.

Still, there are fans who are wondering if he's truly the right guy for the job.

Crazy, right?

Well, after hearing this Jonathan Smith quote after the game, I think everyone should just take a step back and relax.

Smith said that he had five turnovers in his first start with three picks and two fumbles lost. He also lost that first game as a starter with Oregon State by one. But then he became one of the better quarterbacks in school history with over 9,000 passing yards and 52 touchdowns with 29 picks.

Chiles will be fine is basically what Smith is saying. Every quarterback has that forgettable performance that usually launches them into better play. The opener will be just that.

There's no reason to hit the panic button because Chiles is still learning how to be a captain of a college football team at the age of 19 and he's still trying to gel with dozens of new teammates and a handful of new targets. He'll get on the same page soon.

At least he learned from this.
