Former Michigan State football DC Scottie Hazelton has found a new home
Scottie Hazelton had an interesting run as Michigan State football's defensive coordinator during the Mel Tucker era. He came over from Kansas State and was expected to make a quick turnaround of the defense, but it just never happened.
In his four years with the Spartans, the defense never seemingly improved much and he finished his final season in East Lansing with the No. 84 scoring defense which was 68th against the run and 86th against the pass. It was the No. 76 overall defense in the country -- once again near the bottom-third of college football.
But Hazelton had a good defensive mind, his strategy just never worked in East Lansing or the Big Ten.
So now that he's moved on, he's going to hope that the next team he joins will give him an opportunity to build himself back up. But it's clear that he's going to have to earn a defensive coordinator role in the future after his disastrous tenure at Michigan State.
Well, Texas is taking a chance on him.
Jim Comparoni's explanation of the situation above is accurate. It was puzzling to see Hazelton struggle so much at Michigan State after he had successful tenures at Wyoming, North Dakota State, and Kansas State. But he's going to get more opportunities and to be a "special assistant" at Texas can't be a bad gig considering it's one of the top programs in the nation and it won't be hard to get referred for another defensive assistant job in the near future.
The players seemed to love Hazelton in East Lansing so there isn't much bad to say about it. Everyone just wishes it worked out differently.
