Whenever a coaching change happens at Michigan State I tend to always keep tabs on the coaches leaving the program and starting their new chapter elsewhere. However, after the disaster that was the Mel Tucker era, I didn’t plan on following many of his departing coaches just because I didn’t think they would make it in the coaching ranks anytime soon.

But there was one coach in particular who made a shocking move to the best program in the country.

Offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic headed to Alabama.

This move on its own made no sense to me because he wasn’t anything special at Michigan State. In fact, I’d argue the offensive line was the second worst position group behind the secondary. So I’ll never be able to explain how he got the same job at a powerhouse program like Alabama.

But now that he’s there, he seems to be doing a phenomenal job.

This begs the question to be asked, why couldn’t he be successful at Michigan State?

Former Michigan State coach named the No. 1 recruiter in the country

Chris Kapilovic was just named the No. 1 recruiter in the country by 247Sports. This is after he has helped Alabama earn commitments from one five-star tackle, three four-star linemen, and one three-star tackle. Kapilovic even brought former Spartan offensive linemanGeno VanDeMark with him through the transfer portal as well.

So how is he doing this after an awful tenure at MSU?

The only answer I could come up with is because he’s at Alabama. Almost every coach in the country could probably recruit well if they worked for Alabama, so maybe that all there is to it.

But maybe he is a great coach who just couldn’t figure it out at Michigan State. Lane Kiffin tried to hire him at USC when he took over as the Trojans head coach, so maybe the coaching world knows something about Kapilovic that we don’t.

I’ll be curious to see how well he coaches his players at Alabama, because we all know he didn’t do a great job at that at Michigan State. But as it stands now, he’s doing great work at Alabama and it kind of makes me mad.
