Home field advantage is a very real thing in college football. Sometimes I think some American sports vastly overrate how much having the home crowd impacts the visiting team like baseball and even hockey. One sport however that nobody can deny is impacted by a home crowd is college football.

College football has some of the best crowds and atmospheres in the entire sports world. I’d even put our fanbases and atmospheres up against some of the best professional soccer fanbases from around the world.

And Spartan Stadium, I’d argue, has one of the best atmospheres in college football.

I however am obviously extremely biased, but someone who wouldn’t be biased if a former Michigan football player. That’s where Trente Jones comes into play.

Jones is a former Michigan offensive lineman from 2019-2022 and he recently ranked all of the Big Ten atmospheres when it comes to how loud the fanbases are. And Jones put Michigan State in the second tier out of five in his Big Ten atmospheres ranking.

Now as someone who dabbles in content creation a little bit, the titles for each tier in the list above are genius. You’ll see that Spartan Stadium was slotted in the second tier with the title “Can’t hear the person next to you.” For reference, the top tier says “Can’t hear in the huddle.”

How awesome is it for a former player to think this highly of Michigan State’s fanbase, let alone a Michigan player? And if you thought there was any chance this list had some bias to it, he slotted The Big House right in the middle in tier three.

The thing I love about Michigan State’s atmosphere at Spartan Stadium is that it is loud no matter how good or bad the team is. Sure it’s louder when MSU’s having a good season, but that’s the case everywhere. The true test of a good atmosphere is how rowdy it is when the team is struggling, and Spartan Stadium is still one of the best when that’s the case.

I have a feeling this year will be extremely loud as well. I think the fanbase is ready to put last year behind them and support the first team under Jonathan Smith more than ever before. The first couple home games this year aren’t that exciting, but I guarantee when Ohio State comes to town week five we’ll be ready to give the team one of the best atmospheres in Spartan Stadium history.
