A key cog in Oakland's lineup, Trey Townsend has announced his intentions to transfer on Wednesday. He has long felt like a Tom Izzo-type guy, so could he be a player Michigan State basketball should seriously consider?

Townsend has been a key member of Greg Kampe's Oakland team for several years now. Izzo, Michigan State, and everyone throughout the state of Michigan have seen him showcase his talent and abilities.

Fresh off being a major piece in leading the Golden Grizzlies to their first NCAA Tournament berth in over a decade, not to mention the first NCAA tournament win in the school's history, Townsend is in the portal and should have no shortage of suitors.

The Horizon League Player of the Year has officially entered his name in the transfer portal.
In doing so, Townsend is also testing the NBA draft waters, but that has been the case for a lot of players over the last several years, and they typically end up pulling out of the draft and choosing a new destination.

Townsend, a 6-foot-6, 230 pound forward out of Oxford, Mich., was named the Horizon League Player of the Year after appearing in 36 games while averaging 17.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.2 assists.

The Spartans could be a good fit, as they have to replace Malik Hall. And it is no secret that the team needs to find a strong wing player for next season. Townsend spent most of his time playing the four at Oakland, and most of us are hoping to see Xavier Booker at that spot next season, given his 3-point shooting ability as a big.

It isn't a guarantee that Townsend will even have Michigan State in consideration, but him being right in the Spartans' backyard, the fact that he reminds me of Hall, and Townsend's rebounding ability is something that this team would benefit from having in the rotation,

We are going to miss what Hall did for this team so why not try and snag Townsend to fill that void, they're similar players with similar play styles.

There are plenty of decisions out of the hands of the fans, especially roster construction. Townsend is available and being from the state, and given how close Tom Izzo and Greg Kampe are there at least has to be some kind of discussion, right?

Former Spartan Rocket Watts found his home at Oakland so can't the Spartans complete the trade by landing Townsend?

The transfer portal is a vicious beast, but not considering a look at Townsend would be crazy.
