There were a lot of mixed emotions that came out of Michigan State football’s season opening win against Florida Atlantic Friday night. The Spartans' offense left a lot to be desired while the defense was stellar all night. If I had to guess I would say that most of us thought the exact opposite would have happened.

Many guys stood out on the defense against FAU, but one defensive back in particular really caught my eye.

Angelo Grose.

Grose is in his fifth and final season at Michigan State and so far in his career he’s been at best a solid defensive back for the Spartans. However, it seems like he may be turning a corner this season as he accomplished something in Week 1 that no other player in the country was able to do.

Grose was all over the field on Friday and finished the game with one interception and a team-high 12 tackles with nine being solos. This clearly is a very impressive stat line for Grose and is a very encouraging site considering the Spartan’s secondary has been very bad in recent years.

Many other players throughout the country reached some of these totals, but nobody was able to accomplish all three.

Grose has now cemented himself as someone to watch very closely the rest of the season. Anyone can have one impressive game throughout the season, but can he perform like this time and time again?

Michigan State’s defense is going to need Grose to be at his best again this weekend as they take on a Maryland team that scored 50 points in their week one win over UConn. But I think Grose, and the entire defense for that matter, will be up to the test.

The Michigan State defense, led by Grose, already looks much improved, but before I’ll be a firm believer in this unit I need to see them do well against a quality opponent. Thankfully we’ll get to see how that goes in just a few short days.
