4. How does the secondary look?

Anyone who’s remotely paid attention to Michigan State football the last three years knows that the secondary has been problematic. The secondary wasn’t good even during the 2021 season when MSU went 11-2. So I’m most interested to see if the unit is making any noise during camp and showing signs of improvement.

Michigan State did lose a key contributor to the transfer portal in Jaden Mangham, but Smith also went and got an elite defensive back himself in Ed Woods from Arizona State.

The addition of Woods as well as the returners from last year is enough to at least peak my interest. I’ll definitely need to see them play well during fall camp and the start of the regular season before I get too excited about this group, but a part of me does think the potential for them is there.

I don’t expect the secondary to be elite this season, but if Michigan State can just have an average pass defense compared to the rest of the country this fall then I’ll gladly take that.
