2. Out with the old, in with the new

The transfer portal has been subject to much discussion, mostly negative with more and more cases of players changing schools three times in two months just because one school offered $10 more.

But it looks like the Spartan football coaches are using it properly, finding the "low ego, high output" players and letting go of the "me first" distractions.

While the offense took the brunt of the criticism last year and rightfully so, upgrades were clearly needed on defense and the staff did a great job upgrading at all three levels bringing in six defensive line transfers, three linebackers, and four defensive backs.

Offensively, there were some surprising departures on the offensive line, but the additions of Tanner Miller, Luke Newman, and former MSU commit Andrew Dennis should help out. The additions of former Oregon State players like Miller, Jack Velling, and Aidan Chiles should jumpstart the offense with players like these already having experience in offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren's system.
