2. Holding our own against the best teams

Last season was an utter embarrassment when MSU played the best teams on their schedule. Washington, Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State were all top 10 teams that Michigan State played, but each game was a complete blowout. The Spartans were outscored 170-10 in those four games combined.

Yikes.

No, we never expected to win any of those games, but I think we all expected better than that.

So this season, I hope to see Michigan State be competitive in each game. Just like how bowl eligibility will show that the program is on the right trajectory, so will competing against the best teams on their schedule.

Oregon, Michigan and Ohio State are the top teams on the schedule this season, and I don't expect MSU to win any of those games. But what I don't want to see is the Spartans getting blown out by any of them.

I want to watch a game where MSU still has a chance deep into the second half. I want Michigan State to give these teams a scare, even if they don't pull out a win. MSU needs to earn the respect from these teams, and the only way to do that is by playing them all really close.
