Polarizing former Michigan State 6th man shockingly re-enters transfer portal

A year ago, Tre Holloman was making the toughest decision of his life, opting to give up his final year of eligibility at Michigan State under Tom Izzo for a season under known snake-oil salesman Will Wade.

The decision clearly didn’t pay off like Holloman had hoped, posting almost the same exact stats in one year with NC State that he had as a junior with the Spartans. And he was a fan favorite in East Lansing with a larger role undoubtedly coming his way. He wanted a change for whatever reason and decided to play for a program that didn’t value him quite the same.

Following the season, Izzo was talking on a local radio show about a former player who had reached out and told him that he regretted leaving. No one was shocked and everyone assumed it was Holloman.

The regret must have been serious because Holloman is hoping to get another year of eligibility as he just announced that he was in the transfer portal on Saturday afternoon.

The news is shocking not just because Holloman is opting to find a new home for a second time in as many years after leaving Michigan State, but also because he’s tapped out of eligibility. He’s hoping the NCAA decides to implement the fives years of eligibility rule this summer with the current seniors grandfathered in.

Or he might get a waiver because of Wade leaving for another job. I’m not sure the NCAA would go for that if he’s already out of eligibility, but they surprise us with odd decisions almost every day.

Don’t even think about it, Michigan State fans

I already know what everyone is thinking: Holloman is back on the market and looking for one more year of college ball and he regrets leaving Michigan State so why not reach out? Michigan State was lacking shooters this past season and it could have really used him.

Unfortunately, there’s no longer room for him. Michigan State has Kur Teng, Divine Ugochukwu, Jordan Scott, and Jasiah Jervis that could all play shooting guard and Jeremy Fears Jr. and Carlos Medlock Jr. are handling point guard duties. Ugochukwu can also play point which means that Holloman would create too many cooks in the kitchen.

While it would have been nice if Holloman never transferred in the first place and applied for a fifth year with Michigan State, he made the mistake and now the Spartans have no room.

Never doubt Izzo.
