The first Michigan State Spring Showcase with Pat Fitzgerald as head coach will be taking place on Saturday afternoon in East Lansing, and it'll be the first chance to fans to see the new 2026 team.
The coaching staff is excited to see what the team can show for the fans on Saturday afternoon and Fitzgerald is sure to bring the energy. Like many of us, Fitzgerald will be eager to see what players stand out during the showcase as he pieces together his depth chart for the upcoming season.
Fitzgerald has also been opening up to the media in recent weeks about his vision for the program and what he expects from his team early on.
He also gave a slightly-less-encouraging update on his depth chart after Tuesday's practice.
Pat Fitzgerald: "We are very fluid everywhere. Alessio Milivojevic is our starting quarterback, we are good there. Rhys (Dakin) is our starting punter, we are good there. Jordan (Hall) is the starting MIKE." Then implied anything else is up for grabs

Fitzgerald essentially said that Michigan State is going to have an open battle at pretty much every position outside of quarterback, Mike linebacker, and punter. The Spartans are going to be experiencing open position battles throughout the rest of spring and into the summer which is an encouraging development for younger guys hoping to crack the two-deep, but fans aren't thrilled that the team doesn't have a ton of starters locked in yet.
Michigan State does have other "likely" starters
I think Cam Edwards is probably the clear RB1, but I'm sure Fitzgerald didn't want to discourage any of the other backs in that room seeing as he's added a handful from the portal.
The receiver room is going to be relatively wide open behind Chrishon McCray, the tight en position is wide open, the offensive line is still a bunch of moving parts thanks to injuries, the defensive line is wide open, the linebackers are fairly set, and the secondary is also wide open.
However, there are "likely" starters like Edwards and McCray all over the roster. So before anyone freaks out about not having clear starters yet, just know that Fitzgerald only named the guys who don't have much competition for their jobs.
This doesn't mean there's a lack of talent, but rather several guys pushing for every starting spot.
Competition breeds excellence.
