For the first time in program history, and since moving up from Division II, Omaha has made the NCAA Tournament. The Mavericks, Michigan State basketball transfer Frankie Fidler's former team, won the Summit League regular season and tournament titles, earning their first-ever trip to the Big Dance.
And it has to be bittersweet for Fidler who was on the team a year ago when they went just 15-18 and 7-9 in the conference before he decided to transfer to Michigan State.
Fidler was a highly sought-after transfer who was considering Wisconsin, too, as he was good friends with Chucky Hepburn, but when the point guard entered the portal, too, the Omaha forward decided to pack his bags and head to East Lansing for his final year of college ball.
Without Fidler, however, Omaha didn't exactly miss a beat, going 22-12 and winning both regular-season and tournament titles in the Summit League, earning a 15-seed in the NCAA Tournament.
With Michigan State being locked in as a 2-seed, there was a chance that Fidler could see his old team in the NCAA Tournament. A first-round date with the Mavericks would have been a nightmare scenario for a lot of Spartan fans because of the storylines of Fidler's old team beating his new one after he decided to leave for greener pastures.
Omaha players desperately wanted that matchup with their former teammate.
So when Michigan State's name was announced during Selection Sunday, Omaha players were heard saying "I want it" in regards to a matchup with the Spartans. When Bryant was announced, they were disappointed and the video of it is fantastic.

I'm sure there's no bad blood here but these guys wanted to see their old friend in the first round and beating him would have been for bragging rights. It would have been the ultimate "guess you shouldn't have left" slap in the face to Fidler.
Michigan State will face Bryant while Omaha drew St. John's in the first round. We'll see if both teams can get it done -- a Final Four meeting has about a one in a billion chance.
But as Lloyd Christmas from Dumb & Dumber famously stated, "So you're saying there's a chance?"
