Although he’s been out of the game for a few years, Pat Fitzgerald hasn’t lost his ability to identify talent. Fortunately for Michigan State, he’s already proven that he knows how to identity talent early on and work quickly in getting newly-offered recruits to schedule visits.

Fitzgerald is looking for new potential visitors every day and he found a new one on Wednesday in the form of an unranked edge rusher from Ohio.

The Spartans offered Lawrence Kanneh from Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday and immediately locked in an official visit for the first week in June. Kanneh was an unranked and overlooked edge rusher when he received the offer from Fitzgerald but it took less than 24 hours for him to receive his first ranking on 247Sports.

In fact, Kanneh soared up the recruiting rankings to No. 843 overall and he’s now the No. 69 edge rusher in the 2027 class on 247Sports.

This new ranking comes just one day after receiving his Michigan State offer and locking in an official visit for June. Given the fact that he doesn’t have a single Power Four offer yet and he’s already rated an 87 on 247Sports, this just goes to show just how good of a talent evaluator Fitzgerald is.

This quick move up the rankings proves all those who were critical of Fitzgerald after another unranked offer on Wednesday. The man knows what he’s doing.

Michigan State is loading up on official visits

Kanneh is the exact type of recruit that made Mark Dantonio so successful: an overlooked Ohio-based prospect who could be considered a late-bloomer.

Now that he’s locking in an official for June 5, he’s joining a talented group of visitors on that date in East Lansing, headlined by four-star defensive lineman Nehemiah Ombati. Winston DeLattiboudere III and Fitzgerald have been working hard on the defensive line in the 2027 class and these latest scheduled visits are proof.

On top of Kanneh and Ombati, the Spartans will be hosting Myles Smith, Marvin Nguetsop, and Spartan commit Ohimai Ozolua over the next month. Outside of Kanneh, those are all four-star prospects.

Caleb Johnson, Anthony Cartwright, and Ronnie Gomiller are the other scheduled four-star visitors over the next 1.5 months.

Fitzgerald is getting talent to East Lansing. Now he just has to land these guys.
