Michigan State fans are starting to get really excited about year one of the Pat Fitzgerald era. We’re about two months away from kickoff and the anticipation for a fresh start is palpable.

The first-year head coach doesn’t have the most talented roster in the Big Ten, but there are obviously standouts on the team that should help lead Michigan State to the postseason.

Some experts disagree, projecting that Michigan State will miss yet another bowl game.

I have a different opinion about this season than most college football experts, and it’s not just because of my bias. I actually believe that Fitzgerald is going to flex his coaching ability and get the Spartans back to the postseason with a relatively manageable schedule. To me, this is not a bottom-two team in the Big Ten like seemingly everyone has been projecting.

I’m also excited about College Football 27’s release so we can see how good — or bad — EA Sports believes that Michigan State really is.

Well, we have a better idea now that player ratings have been released.

Michigan State’s top-rated player is Cam Edwards

If you asked me who I believed would be Michigan State’s top-rated player in College Football 27, I probably would have guessed Jordan Hall. The senior linebacker has an NFL future and could very well be an All-Big Ten first-teamer this year. He is absolutely one of the top linebackers in the nation.

However, he’s rated just an 86.

I would have also probably guessed that it might be one of the new offensive linemen like Trent Fraley or Ben Murawski or even new punter Rhys Dakin, but it’s none of the above.

Michigan State’s top-rated player is Cam Edwards at an impressive 90 overall. The UConn running back transfer is coming off a 1,000-yard season in 2025 with the Huskies and he’s now just one of four Spartans rated an 85 or higher in the newest college football video game. That’s surprising to me.

The other Spartans to receive at least an 85 rating by EA Sports are as follows:

  • Jordan Hall, LB — 86 overall
  • Charles Brantley, CB — 85 overall
  • Chrishon McCray, WR — 85 overall

It’s obviously not the best team in the Big Ten, but Michigan State has some All-Big Ten talent at the top. It is rather surprising to see three of the Spartans’ top four players being transfers (yes, I’m counting Brantley).

I think EA Sports is telling us to buy all the stock in Cam Edwards. I’m in.
