There’s nothing better than having a team that’s firing on all cylinders in the move his March. Michigan State has had a handful of teams like that under Tom Izzo, and this year’s team could join the others who have made legitimate national title pushes.
Fortunately for Michigan State, it just unlocked a secret weapon in Trey Fort.
Fort, a Samford transfer, had a slow start to his Spartan career, really struggling to find consistent minutes despite coming in as a legitimate scoring threat.
Over the past three games, however, Fort is starting to look like he might just be the missing piece to Michigan State’s national title puzzle. The Spartans have an elite point guard, an elite defense, and really solid veteran starters, but they could use more scoring options. Fort is obviously just that and he’s perking up at the perfect time.
Over the past three games, he’s averaging 9.0 points per game and he’s shooting 60 percent from deep. He’s getting hot and becoming the player we all expected when he transferred in.
It’s been a turbulent road for Fort, but his sudden postseason emergence has Michigan State fans believing in a national title run.
Trey Fort is exactly what Michigan State needed
Michigan State needed a scoring boost in the postseason with Divine Ugochukwu and Kaleb Glenn sidelined. Everyone knew that the Spartans had the coaching, point guard, post play, and defense to contend with just about anyone, but adding another pure scorer to the rotation is huge.
If Michigan State needs a bucket in a late-game situation in either a comeback or if the offense is stalling out, Fort can come in and shoot with some confidence.
Gaining confidence against UCLA, North Dakota State, and Louisville is not only huge for Fort personally after a rough season in East Lansing, but it’s also huge for Michigan State.
How many teams are going to be able to slow down a Spartan team that can punch you in the mouth with its starting five and then it has sharpshooters Kur Teng and Fort coming off the bench to put extra pressure on their defense? Not many.
The next 1-2 weeks will be interesting, but it’s good to finally see Fort shine.
