It’s been a few years since Michigan State fans were this excited about a running back, but Cam Edwards is drawing comparisons to previous Spartan legends.
He hasn’t played a single snap for the Spartans yet, but Edwards is ready for what he expects to be a huge season in the green and white. He’s already set forth goals like winning the Big Ten, winning a national title, and being named the best running back in America, but just like Kenneth Walker III was before the 2021 season, Edwards is being overlooked outside of East Lansing.
The 1,200-yard rusher from UConn was one of the most efficient runners in the sport last season, averaging nearly six yards per touch and he can also be somewhat of a receiving threat.
Edwards has 2,688 yards and 27 touchdowns over the past three seasons, but apparently that just isn’t enough to make him one of the top 20 running backs in college football. In fact, a recent ranking of the top 30 running backs in the country had Edwards at No. 24.
It looks like he’s going to use that as motivation.

Does he have a legitimate gripe? Absolutely. There’s a back two spots ahead of him who had just 224 rushing yards last season. Granted, Aneyas Williams is a popular breakout candidate after averaging 9.3 yards per carry, but really? He rushed the ball 24 times last season and he’s apparently a better back than Edwards entering the season.
And that’s just one of the many gripes that Edwards should have with this list.
A lot of these guys deserve to be high up on the list, but Edwards is much better than No. 24 in the country and everyone who’s followed his career to this point knows that.

Cam Edwards has lofty goals for himself
Edwards spoke to the media on Wednesday after practice and laid out his goals for the 2026 season, and they were lofty, to say the least.
One, he wants to win a lot of games this season. Two, he wants to win the Big Ten. Three, he wants a national title. And four, he wants to be the best running back in college football. Three of these four goals may be unattainable, but being the best running back in America is an honor that has graced one Spartan running back five years ago, so why not again?
In the right situation with the right workload behind an improved offensive line, Edwards can absolutely prove himself as one of the best running backs in the country and he could even be a legit Doak Walker Award finalist. No doubt about that.
A lot will hinge on that offensive line and its ability to improve under Nick Tabacca. If it does improve the way that everyone expects, Edwards should be in for a career year.
He rushed for 1,240 yards and 15 touchdowns last season at UConn, but there is a world where he breaks 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns again to earn All-Big Ten honors.
