This past weekend was a big one for Pat Fitzgerald and Michigan State football as the Spartans hosted several four-star prospects and top targets in the 2027 class.
It was the first official visit weekend of the summer for Fitzgerald and he took advantage, adding some last-minute four-stars to the slate. The Spartans needed some juice after a fairly lifeless Jonathan Smith era took the fun out of recruiting.
Now Michigan State is looking like a program worth playing for again even though Fitzgerald has yet to coach a single game in East Lansing. He’s been impressing recruits on the trail, and that includes a four-star linebacker who happens to be the son of a Michigan State running back legend.
And he’s also committed to Notre Dame.

Michigan State reportedly hosted a surprise visitor in four-star linebacker Amarri Evans, the son of Spartan running back legend Sedrick Irvin who was actually lobbying for an assistant coaching job under Fitzgerald when he was still filling out his staff.
Amarri is ranked the No. 286 recruit in the 2027 class and he’s also the No. 23 linebacker on 247Sports. He’s been committed to Notre Dame since last November.
Michigan State has more than one connection to Amarri Irvin
Fitzgerald replacing Smith may change some things. It would be really good to flip a legacy recruit, especially from a rival like Notre Dame. The connection makes sense not just because Amarri is a legacy recruit whose dad was a star in East Lansing, but also because he was recruited by Max Bullough when he was still Notre Dame’s linebackers coach.
That’s a great connection to have because he committed to Bullough back in November so he’s very familiar with who would be his position coach at Michigan State.
His dad should also help — although he likely won’t push him one way or another.
Sedrick was one of the best running backs in Michigan State history, rushing for over 1,000 yards in his three seasons in East Lansing. He finished with over 3,400 career rushing yards and 41 total touchdowns over his three years at Michigan State before the Detroit Lions drafted him in 1999. He played three seasons in the NFL and spent another on the Dolphins’ practice squad.
Adding Amarri Irvin to the 2027 class would be a massive boost and it would get some positive momentum flowing in this cycle. Fitzgerald has at least a fighter’s chance here.
