Michigan State will be hosting several big-time targets over the weekend, and most of them are from the 2027 class as it looks like the 2026 cycle might be all wrapped up.
Well, it’s almost all wrapped up.
There will be one major prospect on campus this weekend, and he’s the top remaining 2026 target for Pat Fitzgerald as he turns his focus toward the 2027 class. Samson Gash, a Michigan State receiver commit who opted not to sign during the early period, will be be in East Lansing this weekend, and he’ll arguably be the most important recruit on campus.
Gash, the younger brother of Spartan defensive back Caleb Gash, was just at Penn State last weekend and many experts believe the Nittany Lions are the biggest threats to flip him.
All signs have been pointing to Gash committing elsewhere since he didn’t sign with Fitzgerald in the early period, but the fact that his older brother didn’t transfer and his younger brother is a top target in 2027 and will be on campus soon should help the Spartans chances.
Michigan State did receive a positive update in the recruitment of Gash on Wednesday.

According to Greg Smith of Rivals, one team is “re-gaining“ momentum with Gash, and judging by the terminology, it sounds like that means Michigan State — especially considering the Spartans are in the graphic above with only Penn State.
Penn State had the momentum heading into their visit with him, and Michigan State had been fading for a couple of months, so the wording makes this seem like he’s talking about the Spartans.
The replies to the tweet agree.
Pat Fitzgerald just needs to see one go through the hoop
Although Fitzgerald has seen plenty of “shots go through the hoop” in the transfer portal, there’s something special about building a relationship with a top high school prospect and landing him over other Power Four programs. He hasn’t really done that since taking over at MSU.
Fitzgerald did land a couple of last-minute signees during the early period, but this would be his first big high school recruiting win (other than retaining the top commits in 2026), since being hired.
Beating Penn State for a top in-state recruit would do wonders for Fitzgerald’s confidence.
