Michigan State pushing for the No. 2 PG in the 2027 recruiting class

Tom Izzo has a chance to flex MSU’s ‘PGU’ title to this 5-star.

Is Michigan State ‘PGU’? That’s going to be a debate that will never have a clear winner, but Michigan State has had some truly elite point guard play under Tom Izzo even though a lot of the guys didn’t translate to the NBA.

Now he has another elite point guard on his current roster in Jeremy Fears Jr. who he says could be the next Mateen Cleaves and a budding star coming in with the 2026 class in Carlos Medlock Jr.

These two look to carry on the tradition of elite point guard play, and they may soon have some help from yet another elite prospect.

Five-star point guard Nasir Anderson told League Ready that he’s been hearing from 10 schools more than anyone else. Michigan State is one of them.

Anderson is ranked the No. 7 overall recruit and No. 2 point guard in the 2027 class on 247Sports. He’s playing high school ball at Prolific Prep in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and he’s being pursued by some of the biggest names in college basketball. Reigning champ Michigan stands out as well as Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Virginia, Arkansas, and North Carolina.

This is obviously going to be a tough recruiting battle.

Izzo may have the ‘PGU’ title on his side, though. He could utilize that in his recruiting pitch, showing Anderson guys like Mateen, Drew Neitzel, Kalin Lucas, Denzel Valentine, Cassius Winston, and now Fears who had become larger-than-life presences at Michigan State. They all had shots at the NBA and while not all of them translated, the 2028 five-star certainly would.

Not only can he become an immediate NBA-caliber guard like Jase Richardson, but he could become a Spartan legend by committing to Michigan State, staying for a year or two, and helping the program carry on that elite PG1 tradition while winning some rings.

Again, this won’t be an easy battle but if there was ever a week to try and get Anderson on campus to really win him over, it would have to be Grind Week. Make it happen, Tom.

Nasir Anderson is an “incredible watch”

We have college basketball experts calling Anderson an “incredible watch” and saying that he’s built like a running back at the 3 Stripes Select Basketball Circuit this week and others saying that he shined in the first day of the event.

Basically, this is an elite prospect that could be a legitimate program-changer during his freshman season. This kind of feels like a Darius Acuff-type guard.

Anderson kind of reminds me a little of the former Michigan State target who played his only collegiate season at Arkansas in 2025-26 because they’re both athletic point guards with similar builds who play with aggression and confidence.

Just look at how aggressive he plays:

This dude has “Spartan Dawg” written all over him.
