It’s been an eventful week for Tom Izzo’s Michigan State basketball program. He had been awaiting the NBA draft decision of Jeremy Fears Jr. and got the news he wanted just before the deadline. Right before that, he learned of Anton Bonke’s withdrawal from the draft.

Unfortunately, he got some bad news on Friday as he missed out on a five-star point guard target who happens to be teammates of two 2026 Spartan signees.

Five-star point guard Davion Thompson, who the Spartans had been in contact with for about a year, cut his list down to four programs. Michigan State did not make the cut.

Instead, the Spartans’ top rival did.

Thompson had been considered one of Michigan State’s top early targets in the 2027 class, but there hadn’t been much talk of him and the Spartans as of late. This top four now makes more sense.

Michigan, Baylor, Arkansas, and Vanderbilt are now the finalists for Thompson who’s getting set to make a decision on June 10, according to Joe Tipton. I think I speak for every Spartan fan in existence when I say: just don’t go to Michigan.

If he does pick the Wolverines, there will be some fun storylines for those 2027-28 matchups as he faces his former Link Academy teammates. He has a connection to Michigan State which makes this whiff hurt a little more.

Link Academy has still been kind to Michigan State

Missing out on Thompson hurts, but Michigan State still benefitted from a newfound pipeline with Link Academy in Missouri. The Spartans landed two four-stars in the 2026 class from Link in Ethan Taylor and Carlos Medlock Jr.

They’re also both teammates of Thompson.

The fact that Thompson decided to forge his own path makes sense because he plays the same position as Medlock and probably doesn’t want to back him up at the collegiate level. The two are just one class apart so unless Medlock were to go pro after his freshman season, Thompson would likely be PG2 (assuming Fears also leaves) and most five-stars aren’t about that.

Michigan State can’t be too upset with the haul of Medlock and Taylor, especially since the latter has broken out this month at Team USA tryouts, making the national U18 team ahead of the FIBA AmeriCup in Mexico next week.

Link Academy still hooked Michigan State up with a couple future Spartan stars.
