Michigan State makes final 3 for priority in-state WR who’s about to visit

Michigan State is going to need a big month of June if it’s going to try and keep up with some other Big Ten rivals on the recruiting trail.

Given the circumstances, I’d even call 4-5 commits over the next four weeks a huge month for Pat Fitzgerald and the coaching staff. Mel Tucker dug the program into a hole and then Jonathan Smith took the shovel in 2024 after his predecessor was fired. Now that the two dug a hole for four years, Michigan State has some climbing to do.

That climb will have to involve some top in-state prospects.

Days after Michigan State found out that it would no longer be hosting Myles Smith on May 29 which was a big blow to the in-state recruiting for 2027. That in-state success may just pick back up in the near future after the Spartans made the top three for one of the best athletes in the state of Michigan. Along with Michigan State in the top three are Louisville and Illinois.

Don Spillers slotted Michigan State into his “final three” just ahead of his visit to East Lansing. He’s scheduled to be on campus this weekend and you just know Courtney Hawkins and Pat Fitzgerald will be pushing for a commitment.

Spillers was offered by Michigan State last June and Fitzgerald has kept up with him and apparently made him feel like a priority. Now the Spartans could be on commit watch when he visits this upcoming weekend. He’ll be one of several priority targets on campus; it’s a good opportunity for him to bond with potential future teammates.

Michigan State will also have a few 2027 commits on campus.

Spillers is ranked the No. 848 overall recruit in the class by 247Sports. He’s also the No. 13 prospect from the state of Michigan and he also holds an offer from the Wolverines but they didn’t make the cut — the offer was under Sherrone Moore and the previous staff.

Michigan State needs an in-state uptick

So far in the 2027 class, Michigan State has just two in-state prospects committed. That’s not horrible, but in order to really “dominate” in-state recruiting, you’ll need 5-6 guys who are ranked in the top 15 in Michigan. Right now, the Spartans have two guys ranked in the top 11 and Spillers would be No. 3.

Anthony Cartwright, Jack Carlson (MSU commit), and Grant Adloff (MSU commit) will join Spillers as the other in-state recruits who’ll be on campus this weekend.

Lansing all four of those guys would be huge for the future of in-state recruiting because it shows that Fitzgerald is prioritizing the state of Michigan. If he can land Cartwright and Spillers, that shows high school recruits and coaches that not only does Fitzgerald attract in-state talent, but he’s not settling for anything less than the best.

I think we’re about to see an in-state recruiting surge over the next month.
