Tom Izzo has had his recruiting hat on lately as the offseason nears the end of July and he’s identifying some priority targets who he plans on hosting this fall.
On Tuesday, the Michigan State head coach reportedly locked in a big visit.
According to Sam Kayser, Michigan State has locked in fall visit with four-star point guard Jaxson Davis from Monarch Academy in Kansas who’s ranked the No. 35 player in the 2027 class.
He’s also the No. 10 point guard in 2027.

The 6-foot-0, 165-pound guard doesn’t have the size that some might want behind a smaller Carlos Medlock Jr. but he makes up for it with talent. The No. 10 point guard in the 2027 class is also taking an official visit to Iowa on Sept. 19. That’s going to be a huge visit, too, as Ben McCollum continues to boost the Iowa basketball program in the post-Fran McCaffery era.
If he doesn’t commit to Iowa (who’s also going after potential No. 1 overall recruit Cayden Daughtry), I like Michigan State’s chances to potentially seal the deal on his visit to East Lansing.
This could very well be the weekend of the annual MSU Madness event which can be huge for recruiting. Last year, MSU Madness was on Oct. 3, so it’s pretty likely that it’s Oct. 1 this season just based on this scheduled visit. The football team will be in Madison that weekend.
Michigan State may employ the “first PG to commit” strategy
Michigan State is targeting several big-time guards who can play point like Davis, Antonio Pemberton, Joshua Tyson, Asa Montgomery, but Izzo may just employ the strategy of just taking the first that decides to commit.
With Davis not visiting until October, I think we might see other point guards visit for Grind Week earlier in the fall. It’ll be interesting to see what Izzo does if one commits early and he has a chance to get two. I think he could take two guards and a center. Best-case scenario? Adding a small forward like Jordan Page (pipe dream) would be perfect.
One visit is locked in and I’d be willing to bet the rest of the Spartans’ targets will schedule theirs over the next month.
