It looks like Tom Izzo and Michigan State are adding to their 2027 recruiting board this week as the Hall of Fame head coach offered a top-40 center on Sunday and then hosted a top combo guard on Monday.
According to reports, Michigan State is hosted four-star combo guard Joshua Tyson from West Chester, Ohio, who happens to be one of Ohio State’s top targets in the 2027 class.
He’s also being pursued by Cincinnati, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and Penn State, among others.
This visit was a pleasant surprise for Michigan State fans who have sat back and watched as the 2027 cycle’s top prospects had been listing the schools who have reached out with a fraction of them mentioning the Spartans. Now the Spartans have publicized two 2027 targets in back-to-back days. Judging by the targets, it feels like this is going to be one of those small in-between classes which consists of 1-2 commits ranked somewhere in that 30-70 range.
Tyson is ranked the No. 60 recruit and No. 10 combo guard in the 2027 class by 247Sports.
The most recent smaller complementary class was just this past cycle as Jordan Scott and Cam Ward made up the signees. Izzo probably could have landed another recruit but he didn’t anticipate Xavier Booker, Jase Richardson, and Tre Holloman all leaving early.
Hopefully the same won’t be true for 2027 regarding attrition because if all goes to plan, Michigan State will really only be losing Coen Carr, Anton Bonke, and maybe Jeremy Fears.
There’s only room for a couple of commits, so that’s why the offers, targets, and visits have been coming out slowly because Izzo has to be selective.
Tom Izzo is starting to piece his 2027 board together
After offering a top-40 center on Sunday and hosting a top-60 combo guard on Monday, Izzo is starting to piece his big board together for the 2027 class.
Before Sunday, there were only a few public targets and none seemed all that realistic given the teams going after them likely being able to offer massive NIL deals. Izzo will obviously still make a push for some five-star prospects, but he’s playing it relatively safe with Jaydn Jenkins and now Tyson.
And honestly, I don’t mind that.
Some of these smaller two-man classes have yielded elite players. Just because the class isn’t big and the commits haven’t reached five-star status doesn’t mean that they can’t become pros under Izzo — just ask Xavier Tillman from that two-man class in 2017.
The board is coming together so expect more news about targets in the coming weeks.
