Michigan State got a promising update in the recruitment of one of its top targets in the 2027 class earlier this week that somewhat flew under the radar.
Four-star combo guard Joshua Tyson has been a new target for the Spartans and it’s a name that fans should get familiar with because he’s rising to the top of Michigan State’s 2027 board.
Earlier this week, he transferred to a prep school that has been really good to Michigan State over the past decade, or so. The Spartans have been involved with several big-time recruits from the school like Brian Bowen, Darius Adams, and Jalen Haralson but they’ve also landed Jeremy Fears Jr. and Jaren Jackson Jr. from the same program.
Tyson is now at La Lumiere in Indiana, transferring from Lakota West in Ohio.

This is also a big development for Michigan State because he’ll be teaming up with fellow Spartan target Kingston Thomas who’s a legacy recruit and building a rapport could be huge for the 2027 recruiting class. Landing Thomas first could help Michigan State secure Tyson because recruits love to recruit each other — especially if they’re high school teammates.
Tom Izzo has to feel good about his chances
Tom Izzo has been really putting the full-court press on the No. 58 recruit in the 2027 class and I’m assuming he feels really good about his chances to land Tyson over home-state schools like Xavier and Ohio State.
Jason Killop of On3 spoke with Tyson recently about how special it would be to join a program with a history of elite guard play. He said that being next up in that lineage of elite guard play would be really cool to him which means that he’s already already seriously considering it.
If he needs recent proof that La Lumiere guards can succeed at Michigan State, all he needs to do is look at what Fears has been doing in East Lansing over the past couple of years. He’s become an All-American point guard in Izzo’s system. Tyson could also look at Darius Adams and the fact that he turned Michigan State down and is already on his second school in two years.
Tyson just took an unofficial visit to Michigan State in June and is planning an official already. During that unofficial visit, he received an offer from Izzo and the four-star combo guard called him a legend and said that meeting him in person meant a lot.
I’m not going to predict that Michigan State will land Tyson, but I would say that the Spartans put themselves in a prime position to land him over Ohio State and Xavier.
This recruitment will be worth following closely.
