It shouldn't come as a surprise that Michigan State football has been hot on the recruiting trail. As the 2025 Spartans are currently working through winter conditioning, the coaching staff has been very focused on getting as much talent to come to East Lansing.
A great start to a recruiting class is getting your centerpiece at the quarterback spot. Jonathan Smith has done just that, as Kayd Coffman from East Kentwood High School near Grand Rapids made his commitment this past Friday.

It's a huge get for the Spartans as Coffman becomes the first in-state quarterback to commit to Michigan State since Theo Day was part of the 2018 class.
Coffman became the second member of the class behind Joey Caudill a tight end from Ohio. He is rated as the No. 22 best quarterback in the class and is a four-star according to On3 Sports. He picked the Spartans over offers from Cincinnati, Duke, Iowa State, Ole Miss, and Syracuse.
Coffman was a huge get, but that wasn't the only big recruiting news of the past weekend, as the Spartans also landed a very coveted player on Saturday.
Edward Whiting became the third member of the class. Further showcasing that Smith and the rest of the coaching staff want to continue to build their tight end room. He has famously put tight ends into the NFL, and that has been a major focus thus far in the tenure.
Whiting is a four-star recruit from Sioux Falls, S.D. He's a 6-foot-6, 230-pound multi-versatile athlete as he also plays basketball and participates in track & field.

He has been receiving interest from plenty of teams well within Michigan State's realm as he also held offers from UCLA and rival Michigan. He also had offers from plenty of other teams around the country including the likes of Florida in the SEC, according to Andrew Birkle from the Detroit Free Press.
Sure the 2025 class ended up being well below expectations in the overall rankings, but to see Smith and the Spartans building momentum and to have three commits for 2026 already and it's only February that's a very good sign.
