Michigan State football reaches out to intriguing South Carolina EDGE transfer

Jonathan Smith and Michigan State football might be in the middle of a bye week, but that hasn't stopped the first-year head coach from working on roster improvement.

The new head coach has already proven that he can build a solid roster in the transfer portal as he landed a number of key players from that route this past offseason. He landed the No. 1 quarterback in the transfer portal along with Jack Velling, Tanner Miller, Jordan Turner, Wayne Matthews III, and Luke Newman. The team got better this offseason.

And he's wasting no time getting back to the transfer portal even though most of the team's goals are still in front of it with a 3-3 record halfway through the year.

Although the postseason is still possible, Smith knows that happiness in college football is only temporary and complacency is the rival of success. That's why he's already contacted Indiana wide receiver transfer, and No. 1 pass-catcher for the Hoosiers in 2023, Donaven McCulley.

On Friday, it was reported that Michigan State reached out to another veteran transfer. This time, it was edge rusher Bangally Kamara from South Carolina.

Kamara had a productive career at Pitt before transferring to South Carolina for the 2024 season and when he decided to redshirt, he was basically told to transfer by Shane Beamer.

He played in just four games with nine tackles and a tackle for loss for the Gamecocks.

The list of potential suitors for Kamara is winnable for Michigan State. The Spartans should win a recruitment against Cal, SMU, Toledo, and Syracuse.

Let's see if Smith can kick off the 2025 transfer class on a high note.
