Jonathan Smith and Michigan State football are no strangers to the transfer portal.

Just this past winter, Michigan State lost a number of players to the portal and many of them ended up in positive situations like Simeon Barrow and Derrick Harmon. Others, however, wound up in lesser spots still looking to secure playing time and potentially regretting their decisions.

Smith did a good job of flipping the roster and hitting the portal to rebuild. He landed several high-profile targets such as Aidan Chiles, Jack Velling, Tanner Miller, Jordan Turner, Wayne Matthews III, and Ed Woods to complement the current roster and foster some competition.

It looks like the first-year head coach is wasting no time in getting to the portal this year as he's already reached out to his first transfer target, according to Chris Hummer of 247Sports.

Donaven McCulley is a top target for Smith and Co. after hitting the transfer portal recently which has become a new trend in college football. The mid-season entering of the transfer portal may be concerning for some programs, but Smith and the Spartans are looking to take advantage.

McCulley was the Hoosiers' top receiver a year ago, catching a career-high 48 passes for 644 yards and six touchdowns while the next-closest receiver had under 400 yards.

It's clear that the Indiana offense just didn't have much of a spot for him this season as he kind if slipped down the depth chart for the 6-0 Hoosiers. That's not to say that he couldn't help a team with a glaring need at receiver like the Spartans and clearly there are other potential suitors for him.

This would be a nice get for Smith.
