Arguably the biggest win of the offseason for Jonathan Smith and Michigan State football took place on Saturday evening.
Just two days after taking in a Michigan State hoops blowout against Washington while enjoying some Melting Moments, FCS All-American offensive tackle Conner Moore announced he would no longer be taking other visits and then later in the day, he committed to the Spartans.
Moore announced on Saturday night that he would be transferring from Montana State to Michigan State after an All-American season there.
The news was kind of shocking given that Moore is from Ohio and he was being courted by both Cincinnati and Ohio State. He canceled his visit with the Buckeyes after his trip to East Lansing and committed to the Spartans, crediting Jim Michalczik and the coaching staff.
This proved a lot of doubters of this coaching staff wrong because Michigan State targeted him and beat out some home-state favorites, including the program currently playing for a national title. Jonathan Smith and Michalczik proved that they can land big-time talent and this is huge for the future of recruiting, especially in the portal.
Moore was the top-ranked available offensive tackle in the transfer portal, per 247Sports, and he's going to be a starter immediately. Oh, and he's planning on enrolling and starting school this week.
Seeing the staff close on such a big fish in the transfer portal is impressive and it should give all Spartan fans hope that they can turn this thing around. Getting an elite offensive lineman to commit after he got interest from his home-state powerhouse program is impressive and new life has been breathed into the fanbase.
